Allotment tools

Sow every row at the right gap.

A folding ruler of crossed bars. Pull it out to the spacing on the scale, lock it, and every mark is the same distance apart. Lay it in the drill and sow at each one.

How it works

  1. step 1

    Pick a size

Start from a ready-made size or set the biggest gap and how many marks you want. The crop buttons show where each crop sits on it.

  2. step 2

    Print the fit test

Two short bars and a cap. Check the bars turn on a bolt without wobble and a nut presses into the cap.

  3. step 3

    Build and sow

Bolt the bars together, set the gap on the scale and tighten the knob. Lay it in the drill and drop a seed at each mark.

The generator runs OpenSCAD in your browser, so nothing is uploaded. It is a parametric model: a size change is a setting, not a new design.

Questions

How does it keep the gaps equal?

It is a lazy-tongs linkage, like an expanding coat rack. However far you stretch it, the centre bolts stay the same distance apart.

What gaps can it do?

The standard size goes from 3 to 10 cm using every mark. Use every other mark for 6 to 20 cm, or every third for 9 to 30 cm. The scale shows all three.

What bolts do I need?

M4 bolts and nuts: one per pivot. The workbench lists the lengths and how many. Nyloc nuts on the outer pivots keep them snug but free to turn.

What size printer do I need?

Up to a 15 cm biggest gap fits a 220 mm bed, like a Creality Ender V3. The wide 20 cm size has bars that print corner to corner.

Is it free? Do I need to install anything?

It is free and runs in your browser. The generator runs OpenSCAD locally, so nothing is uploaded and there is nothing to install.
